Iceberg climbing rose pine cedar fence11/4/2023 ![]() They were weak plants to begin with.Īt one time, budding was the most cost effective way to bring roses to market, but times have changed. ![]() Some roses cannot grow well on their own roots. ![]() Many roses thrive on their own roots and never did need to be budded, but would have required more time to mature to the level of customer expectations. If a plant is budded to an established rootstock, then it is generally larger and more appealing to the eventual customer. Roses were initially budded to rootstocks in order to bring them to market faster. Ralph Moore has said, "As soon as you think you know everything about roses, roses change the rules." When it comes to roses, no one knows it all, even after years and years of experience. Unfortunately, this is not a true statement. "As everyone knows "own root roses" do not have a very strong root system, they will not grow very well and are not as hardy." I'll have to compare it to my little plant as it grows up. Most doesn't impress me at all, but once I found some that was exceptionally potent. You'll also notice it can be extremely variable concerning the quantity and type of prickles each plant arms itself with." So I guess it's possible that this lovely old specimen could be Iceberg, but I have my doubts. In his E-zine article, Kim Rupert writes: "Iceberg varies a fair amount, and not least in fragrance. they were as bad as the ones on "Westerland." I had always head that Iceberg had few prickles. The Iceberg plant in my garden is very young, so I can't compare it to the one at the nursery. The ones for sale didn't look much like the older plant. I asked the people working at the nursery if they knew which rose it was, and their consensus was that it was "Iceberg" - which, incidentally, seems to be the only white climber that particular nursery sells. The petals had a full, old-fashioned form, and the flowers smelled lemony to me. It had thick, vigorous canes with glossy leaves and large, fierce prickles. Just outside the nursery, growing against a fence, was a gorgeous white climbing rose. I stopped at a local nursery today to see if they happened to have a variety of ornamental grass that I wanted.
